Traffic light system / color system
The most important information about the color markings on the products in the shop:
Green: Fairly easy to legalize, sometimes requires presentation to an inspector or can be done via individual approval, but is usually quite straightforward.
Yellow: Individual approval is absolutely necessary based on the included test report. It may not be possible at your location, but it will most certainly be possible with us if the necessary conditions are met.
Red: Cannot be registered under any circumstances.
Blue: Individual approval is only guaranteed at our location. It may be possible at your location. However, depending on the modification that needs to be approved, it may only be possible with us, such as performance upgrades.
Q: Can I have a product with a material certificate registered near me, or do I have to come to you for that?
A: Yes, theoretically possible, but that depends on your trusted inspector. Depending on the product, we have a material certificate or a material confirmation, which refers to a material report from us and confirms the material is OK, which allows the part to be tested on the car. The inspector himself then has to decide whether the part was installed properly and thus register it; we have no influence over that. To simplify things, if your inspector agrees with our documents and everything was installed correctly, he will register it. But that's his decision. With us, registration is guaranteed if everything was installed correctly, because our inspectors know the parts and the tests, and everything has been determined to be registrable.
Q: Can I have a product with a test report registered near me, or do I have to come to you for that?
A: We do not issue our own test reports to customers. However, we are willing to send these to the inspectors, for example, our tensile tests of brackets and seat consoles. Test reports included with the product should make registration possible, but not every inspector is permitted to do this. So it's best to talk to your trusted inspector about your project; they will explain what's important. In our company, registering such products isn't a problem if the conditions are met. If in doubt, ask us; we'll be happy to help.
Q: Do I have to register a part I've installed that has a parts certificate?
A: Yes, it's absolutely necessary; it's stated on the first page of the parts certificate. So, you have to take your vehicle to an inspector who is authorized to perform modification approvals according to §19(3). Almost everyone is allowed to do this. The certificate must also be specifically for your car. However, your car can't be drastically modified for this to happen. If the part you installed interacts with another part on the car that you modified, a §19(3) approval is no longer possible, and an individual approval must be performed according to §19(2). Not every inspector is permitted to do this. If the inspector finds the combination of both to be acceptable, they will register the vehicle. If you have an imported car, e.g., an American Miata, each approval is an individual approval according to §19(2).
Q: Do I have to register a part that I installed and that has an EC/ECE/REG type approval or an ABE?
A: If the part and the certificate are for your car and nothing else has been modified on the outside, you don't have to register the part. If something has already been changed—for example, you're using lowering springs with a vehicle type approval (ABE) or parts certificate and installing different wheels on the car with an ABE—then the lowering springs and wheels will affect each other, and the vehicle must be re-registered, most likely as an individual approval according to §19(2). In rare cases, it can also be re-registered as a modification approval according to §19(3). Here again, the exception is imported vehicles. ABEs or these operating permits are not valid for such vehicles. The part must then be explicitly registered.
Q: Can I simply remove the standard driver's airbag and install an airbagless steering wheel, and does it have to be registered?
A: In certain cases, the standard driver's airbag may be removed, but it must always be registered. In the MX-5 NA, this is easily possible without modifying the seats or belts or installing a roll bar. However, not every airbagless steering wheel is approved for this purpose. The steering wheels in our shop are, so we can provide this information. Whether this is possible at your location depends on the inspector and the documents for the steering wheel. If the steering wheel is labeled "with test report," a document is included. If the steering wheel is labeled "individual on-site inspection," then there is an internal test report, which we don't have access to and can't send out. There are very early MX-5 NB models where the driver's airbag can be removed without any problems. After that (NB and NBFL), it's only possible in conjunction with tested bucket seats with tested seat consoles, tested roll bars, and tested seat belts. We have a corresponding range in our program. The steering wheels are briefly described again, indicating the conditions that must be met for trouble-free registration.
Q: Can my wheels protrude from the sides of the fender?
A: The tread/profile of the tire must not protrude under any circumstances, not just when viewed from above, but also when viewed from the front and from the rear. The rim flange and tire sidewall may be visible. If in doubt, attach this wheel cover as well, then you'll be on the safe side: https://sps-motorsportshop.com/felgen/strassenfelgen/zubehoer/5090/verbreiterung- fuer-radabdeckung-eibach?number=VT540-S
Q: Which rims with which tires fit my MX-5?
A: For each rim, we've written what you need to install it on your MX-5. If you're unsure about a size, please contact us by email and we'll help you.
Q: Can a part/conversion marked "Individual On-Site Approval" also be registered near me?
A: That depends very much, but unfortunately not for performance upgrades. Due to increasingly strict regulations by the KBA, we now have to provide proof of the legal commissioning of a performance upgrade, so the conversions must be registered with us on-site.
Q: What power output can I get with a turbo kit with a parts certificate registered at my location?
A: We will send you a parts certificate with a power output of 103 kW (140 hp) for the 1.6L NA or NB, and 122 kW (166 hp) for the 1.8L NA or NB. The higher power outputs of 161 kW (219 hp) for the 1.6 or 180 kW (245 hp) for the 1.8 can only be registered at our location, as we have to confirm the body strength for a power increase of more than 40% compared to the stock engine.
Q: What do the red markings "without registration," "currently not registerable," or "no registration possible" mean?
A: This means the parts cannot be registered under any circumstances. Either there is no way to legalize them, or we have not yet conducted a test for them. However, if you use it on the road, you are definitely driving illegally and you might get yourself stopped.
