MX-5 Roll Bars & Cages: Safety for Street & Track | SPS Motorsport

The MX-5 is a great car for driving on the road or trackday. However, you should not lose sight of the safety aspect, especially when using the vehicle in this way. Because in case of a rollover, there is very little or no protection for the occupants. You should always bear this in mind, especially without a roof, as this is where passenger protection is lowest. But we have a remedy here with our large selection of roll bars, which are handcrafted for each customer. We will bring you a little closer to our range of roll bars and explain what you need to consider with which bar!

 

 

Does a roll bar for the MX-5 make sense?

As mentioned above, there is very little to no protection for the occupants of the MX-5 in case of a rollover. In our opinion, this means that a roll bar belongs in every MX-5 that is used on the racetrack or road. This is where the danger of turning around the longitudinal axis is greatest. We therefore recommend a roll bar to every MX-5 driver who wants to make his roadster more stable and safer.

 

 

For which models does SPS Motorsport offer roll bars?

We offer roll bars for all models, i.e. MX-5 NA / NB / NBFL as well as MX-5 NC and MX-5 ND. We offer roll cages for MX-5 NA / NB / NBFL. As already mentioned, all roll-over devices are real handcraft work by us and are checked by 2 independent people before delivery in order to maintain our quality standards. The roll bars can be ordered in the standard color (matt black), in a special color according to customer requirements or completely without powder coating (in the event that someone is a painter or powder coater himself or has one on hand). Most roll bars are available with or without a harness bar to enable 4-point belts to be fitted. Roll cages are always equipped with a harness bar.

 

 

Which roll bars are available for my MX-5?

Basically, we offer different roll bar designs for each MX-5. These are:

 

Track:

 

  • Inverted V-bracing in the main bar
  • Compatible with all softtops and hardtops
  • Also available as a roll cage for NA / NB / NBFL

Extreme:

 

  • High cross bracing in the main bar
  • Compatible with all softtops and hardtops
  • Also available as a roll cage for NA / NB / NBFL

Clubsport:

 

  • Deep-drawn cross bracing in the main bar
  • Only compatible with hood with plastic window softtop and hardtop
  • Also available as a roll cage for NA / NB / NBFL

Classic:

 

  • Double arch structure
  • Design based on classic sports cars, which often only had impact protection behind the seats

 

These are available for most models with and without a harness bar, which can be recognized by the "+" in the name. MX-5 NA / NB / NBFL roll bars are also available as XL or non-XL roll bars.

The non-XL variant is our "classic" variant, where the main bar is screwed to the rear wall behind the seats. It is basically suitable for every driver of average height.

XL roll bars have been specially developed for taller people to create more space. Here the main bar is screwed to the belt towers so that the seat can be moved back to the rear wall.

 

 

Which tools do I need to install my roll bar or roll cage?

 

Roll bar:

 

  • Ratchet set for screwing the roll bar
  • Drill for drilling the attachment points
  • Jigsaw for cutting out sheet metal parts
  • File for deburring the cut sheet metal parts
  • Touch-up pen for sealing the cut sheet metal parts
  • Cavity wax for additional sealing

 

 

Roll cage:

 

  • Ratchet set for screwing the roll cage
  • Drill for drilling the attachment points
  • Jigsaw for cutting out sheet metal parts
  • Welding device for welding the A-pillar connection to the body
  • File for deburring the cut sheet metal parts
  • Touch-up pen for sealing the cut sheet metal parts
  • Cavity wax for additional sealing

Roll bar Track + XL
Powdercoating: Standard (black matt)
Our new roll bar suitable for MX-5 NA / NB / NBFL especially for taller customers. Due to the modified front mounts, it is possible to push the seat completely to the rear in order to be able to offer tall customers more legroom. A full main bar with V struts, which are welded between the two struts and the upper arch of the main bar, to secure the passengers in case of an accident. In addition, a harness bar between the two vertical struts of the main bracket is welded. The roll bar is powdered in black. The brackets are made of 45x2,5mm and 40x2mm seamless drawn steel tube (ST37) according to DIN 2391. The scope of delivery includes the bracket with counter plates and mounting material. Of course we also use the bar in private cars of our employees.The roll bar is simply screwed on, no welding work required. All of our roll bars for MX-5 NA / NB / NBFL are compatible for both hardtop and softtop (please note the rear window note here).Will be sent with material certificate!   The OEM wind deflector can´t be used anymore. Depending on the positioning of the backrest, it may happen with original seats or half-shell seats that the seat can no longer be fully moved backwards. Roll bar Extreme + XL

Our new roll bar suitable for MX-5 NA / NB / NBFL especially for taller customers. Due to the modified front mounts, it is possible to push the seat completely to the rear in order to be able to offer tall customers more legroom. The roll bar "Extreme" is a full Roll bar with X struts, which are welded between the two struts, which face rear and the upper arch of the main bar, to secure the passengers in case of an accident. Opposite the Extreme roll bar, the cross ends higher, so that the sheet metal behind the seats does not have to be cut as far as you would have to with the Extreme, but only the space for the two support struts which face rear must be cut out. The Rollbar is powder coated in black. The Bars are made of 40x2mm seamless drawn steel tube (ST37) according to DIN 2391. Included in delivery is the powder-coated Bar with counter plates and mounting hardware. SPS roll bar "Roofless" MX-5 ND
The "Roofless" roll bar is completely new in our portfolio and is especially designed for people who no longer drive a softtop. Accordingly, the vehicle can be used completely without a roof or with a retrofitted hardtop. A full-fledged main bar down to the floor panel with V struts, which are welded into the main bar and rest on the original strut behind the seats, as well as with a belt strut to protect the passengers in an emergency.
